Japan helps Indonesia improve capacity of maritime security force

The Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) has participated in a two-day long-distance advanced training on performing maritime security duties with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG).
Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Maritime SecurityAgency (Bakamla) has participated in a two-day long-distance advanced trainingon performing maritime security duties with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG).

The training, which started on July 13, saw theattendance of hundreds of participants from various forces under Bakamla. Theywere provided by experts from the JCG with materials on international maritimelaw, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, how to conductinspections on the target ship, and techniques for arresting suspects on thetarget ship.

The two sides also exchanged experience in implementinglegal action at sea, arresting suspects and rescuing victims.

In a statement released on July 14, Bakamla’s trainingdirector Sandy M. Latief said the training was a good opportunity for Bakamlapersonnel to know and understand the material provided by experts from theJapan Coast Guard Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT).

Senior Representative of the Japan InternationalCooperation Agency (JICA) in Indonesia Honzu Shigeo said that this onlinetraining collaboration had been carried out three times. It aims to improve thecapabilities of the current Bakamla personnel, he added./.
