Japan, ASEAN enhance regional security cooperation

Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will agree to enhance cooperation among them to create a "more peaceful and stable security environment" in the region, the Kyodo News Agency cited a diplomatic source as saying on November 6.

The draftstatement, designed to reaffirm the common positions of Japan and ASEANin regional and global challenges, including maritime security, will beissued at an annual ASEAN-Japan summit next week in Naypyitaw, thecapital of ASEAN chair Myanmar.

Japan and ASEAN leaders at thesummit will share a common view disputes have to be addressed peacefullywithout use of force and by exercising self-restraint and avoidingactions that would complicate the situation, the source said.

They will also agree on cooperation in the areas of disaster management,emergency response, and humanitarian assistance, as well as energysecurity. ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.-VNA
