Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has grabbed internationalheadlines over the past week for the country’s quick and transparent actions tocontain the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Communist Party of Vietnam has earned local and foreignplaudits for its firm COVID-19 containment measures, according to an Asia Timesstory written by columnist David Hutt.

The party has won hearts and minds by touting its quick, effective and transparent management of the viral outbreak, the story said.

“While Vietnam’s confirmed cases have risen in recent days, mostly due to tourists arriving from Europe, the new epicenter of the globalpandemic, Hanoi’s strict containment measures have conveyed a bunker spiritthat has arguably united the communist-run country.”

Indeed, Vietnam responded quicker than most Asian nations, the story noted.

The Asia Times quoted Carl Thayer, a Vietnam expert andemeritus professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia, as sayingVietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc “has been proactive in takingaction.”

“He has established a task force to oversee national, provincial and local levels. The government has gone into overdrive with aninformation campaign to advise citizens what actions they should take to retardthe spread of the virus,” Thayer said.

He added that the military, which enjoys huge respect andtrust in Vietnamese society, has been mobilized to assist with public healthmeasures through medical specialists and the provision of quarantinefacilities.

The Ministry of Health has been active in announcing newinfections and providing sanitation guidance, Michael Tatarski, a journalistbased in Ho Chi Minh City, told Asia Times.

The global health community agrees with Vietnam's measures, said Kidong Park, theHanoi-based representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), who has praised the Vietnamese government for its “proactiveness and consistencythroughout the response.”

Meanwhile, the Diplomat has hailed Vietnamese authoritiesfor remaining transparent about the disease information as well as allowingunrestricted information on Facebook.

“In fighting the epidemic, the government put theexistence and life of the people first and foremost. In that spirit, thegovernment has been remarkably transparent, briskly addressing thepsychological crisis among the people,” the Washington-based magazine said.

Many foreign news outlets have reported on Vietnam’spreventive measures against the COVID-19 spread, which include suspension ofvisa-free access for foreigners and closures of schools, cinemas, bars andclubs, massage and karaoke parlours and gaming centres in major cities untilthe end of March.

The New York-based Bloomberg last week reported thatVietnam’s military was expanding its quarantine capacity to house thousands ofVietnamese returnees from abroad with facilities able to accommodate about60,000 people.

As of March 23 evening, the number of COVID-19 patients in Vietnam had reached 122, 17 of whom have recovered.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said on the day that the country is entering the third phase of the COVID-19 fight as risks of community spread are high, and the next 20 – 25 days are a big challenge to the country’s efforts in combating the disease.

Citing the Health Ministry as predicting that the outbreak will reach its peak in Vietnam in about late April, he voiced concern about the fact that large gatherings still occur. Besides, there are also infection risks among those at quarantine centres.

Requesting stronger actions, PM Phuc ordered close control of exit and entry by road, railway and air be continued, concentrated quarantine pushed ahead regardless of how much it costs the State, self-quarantine ensured in line with regulations, and safety for medical workers and other staff engaging in the combat guaranteed./.
