Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesian police have recaptured more than 100 inmates whomanaged to escape from an Indonesian jail on Sumatra island.
Theprisoners fled the jail in Siak district on Sumatra island early in the morningof May 11 after rioting and a fire broke out at the detention centre.
Footageon local TV stations showed the facility engulfed in flames.
Therioting was triggered after guards beat several inmates who were caught usingmethamphetamine, police said. Four people were wounded, including a policeman.
Authoritieslaunched a massive manhunt and 115 prisoners had been recaptured by latemorning, Riau province police chief Widodo Eko Prihastopo said.
Policewith assistance from the army and surrounding community are still searching forthe rest, he said, adding that dozens of detainees were still at large. Priorto the incident, the prison detained nearly 650 inmates.-VNA
