Jakarta (VNA) – Incumbent Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called on thepublic to reunite following the intense presidential election between him andhis rival Prabowo Subianto, reported the Jakarta Post.
Speakingto supporters and journalists in Djakarta Theatre onApril 17, Widodo called on all parties to wait for the official final tally ofthe General Elections Commission (KPU), despite quick count results showing hewas leading the presidential race.
TheIndonesian President said he and members of his coalition learned the resultsof various exit polls and quick counts of the presidential election by April 17afternoon.
Hesaid people have to be patient and wait for the official tally.
Themajority of quick count results conducted by established pollsters have shownthat Widodo is leading the race by a 10 percent margin.
Meanwhile,other presidential candidate Prabowohas claimed a lead over his rival. He stressedthat certain pollsters have been partisan in a bid to sway public opinion as ifhe has already lost.
Indonesia opened the polls to more than 190million eligible voters on April 17 in one of the world's biggest single-dayelections.
In the elections, voters selected a president,vice president and more than 20,000 legislators. For the first time,Indonesia held its presidential and legislative elections on the same day, withmore than 245,000 candidates running for more than 20,000 seats.-VNA
