Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Muslims, who make up nearly 90 percent of the country’s population, are busying preparing for Idul Fitri or Lebaran, the New Year festival of Islamic people that comes at the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan.

The first day of the new year of 1437 under the Islamic calendar, falls on July 6 this year. The festival is the most important holiday of the Islamic people and will last for one week.

In the context of economic difficulties, the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs called on Islamic people to celebrate the Idul Fitri festival in a simple and economic way.

Idul Fitri is also the time the traffic across the Southeast Asian country sharply increases when people try to return home for family reunions.-VNA
