Illustrative image (Source: thearmageddontimes.com) Jakarta (VNA) – Eruptions of volcanoes in Indonesia in recent days have forced the closure of two airports and the cancellation of a number of flights.
On August 3, Mount Gamala on the eastern island of Ternate erupted after a moderate earthquake in the region. The airport on the island has to be closed, according to the National Disaster Agency.
The airport on Lombok was also closed on August 1-2 due to the eruption of Mount Rinjani, causing the cancellation of 29 domestic and international flights to the island.
The airport on Bali, which attracts millions of foreign visitors every year, remained open but several flights linking Lombok and Bali were cancelled while several services between Australia and Bali were also halted.
On August 2, Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island also erupted although its ash clouds did not disrupt any flights.
Indonesia, which sits on a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean, is home to around 130 active volcanoes.-VNA
