Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia will seek the strengthening ofefforts for mitigating human trafficking at the plenary meeting of the 42ndAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which will take place from May 9-11 in Labuan Bajo, West Nusa Tenggara.

Indonesian Foreign AffairsMinistry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah has revealed that human trafficking willbe one of the key topics of discussion during the summit because of theattention paid by ASEAN leaders to the issue in view of the high number ofcases involving human trafficking in the region through online scams.

According to the minister,Indonesia's initiative will be discussed and described within the ASEAN Leaders’Declaration on Combating TIP Caused by Abuse of Technology.

He emphasised that thecomplexity of human trafficking necessitates collective regional handling, starting from detection, prevention, protection, repatriation, andrehabilitation, to tackling the root of the problem. Thus, the capacity of ASEANmember countries' law enforcement forces should be strengthened for carrying outinvestigation, evidence gathering, victim identification, and prosecution./
