The military decentralisation plans include the establishment of a new navyfleet based in Papua province and capacity upgrades in current navy bases inWest Kalimantan and North Kalimantan provinces.
Indonesian military Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo said the commanddecentralisation approved by President Joko Widodo was conducted by setting up newregional military command chapters as well as new military operation commandunits.
The president also ordered the military to take responsive stance inanticipating the impacts from the developing global conditions, he added.
The commander said the decentralisation was part of moves to address thepresident's doctrine to make Indonesia as the world's maritime axis.
To finance the command decentralisation, theIndonesian parliament approved the military’s request on additional of 37trillion IDR (about 2.7 billion USD) in the 2016 budget.
The navy would receive the largest amount of the fund, followed by the airforces and the land forces. The sumswould be used to procure new navy vessels, armaments, radar systems, missilesand new warplanes particularly military transporter ones.-VNA
