Indonesia: Thousands evacuated after volcano alert rise

Nearly 3,000 Indonesians have been evacuated from their homes after the country’s National Agency for Disaster Management elevated the threat posed by Mount Sinabung volcano on Sumatra island to the highest possible level.

Military sources said soldiers andpolice evacuated 2,730 residents from four villages within a determineddanger zone around the south and southeast of the volcano and movedthem to temporary shelters.

The 2,457-metre mount erupted in September 2013 after 400 years of dormant volcanic activity.

A massive eruption in February 2014 claimed 16 lives while the mostrecent eruption on February 1 left 11 people dead and three othersinjured.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi

Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina, along with foreign partners Sinopec from China and Kuwait’s Kufpec, has signed a contract to explore the Melati oil and gas block, located off the coast of Sulawesi. The block is estimated to contain trillions of cubic feet of gas reserves.
