Indonesia parliament ratifies sea border agreement with Singapore

The Indonesian Parliament on December 15 ratified a sea border agreement with Singapore demarcating maritime boundaries in the eastern stretch of the Singapore Strait, local media reported.

Singapore (VNA) – TheIndonesian Parliament on December 15 ratified a sea border agreement withSingapore demarcating maritime boundaries in the eastern stretch of theSingapore Strait, local media reported.

The agreement was approved by amajority of lawmakers, said Fahri Hamzah, Deputy Speaker for the IndonesianParliament.

The Parliament has endorsed thegovernment to further cooperate with Singapore to ensure national economicinterests and security, according to

Hanafi Rais, Deputy Chairman of the HouseCommission for defense and foreign affairs.

Singapore and Indonesia signedthe sea border treaty in 2014 when former Indonesian President Susilo BambangYudhoyono visited Singapore.

The agreement defined a 9.45 kmlong border between Singapore’s Changi and Indonesia’s Batam Island. It is thethird maritime boundary treaty of the two countries along the Singapore Strait.The two previous ones were signed in 1973 and 2009.-VNA
