Jakarta (VNA) - The Jakarta authority has taken many measures to reduce thenumber of private vehicles and encouraged locals to use public transport means.
Headof the Greater JakartaTransportation Agency (BPTJ) Bambang Prihartono said a master strategy for 2018-2029is being implemented by the country, focusing on improving transportinfrastructure and installing modern traffic monitoring systems.
Withspecific roadmaps, Indonesia hopes to remarkably reduce traffic jam by increasingthe average speed of all types of vehicles from 10-11km/hour to 20-30km/hour bythe end of 2029.
Passenger pick-up points in residential areas will create convenience for residents,Bambang said, adding that his country is focusing on developing publictransport networks and taking measures to limit private vehicles.
Campaigns to raise public awareness of benefits of using public transport havebeen carried out, he said.
One of the models to be developed in Jakarta is Transit-oriented Development (TOD)which is a mixed-use residential and commercial area designed to maximiseaccess to public transport.
In 2019, the two new transport systems including subway and overheadrailway will be put into operation to serve residents in Jakarta. These areexpected to reduce traffic jam in the city that is said to be famous for itsbad traffic condition.
As scheduled, in its first year of operation, the MassRapid Transit (MRT)system in Jakarta will transport 65,000 passengers per day, helping toremarkably reduce the number of people traveling by means on the ground.-VNA
