Indonesia implements master economic development plan

The Indonesian Government is effectively carrying out an ambitious programme in a bid to reduce unemployment rate, boost the nation’s economic growth and narrow the development gap between regions.
The Indonesian Government is effectively carrying out an ambitiousprogramme in a bid to reduce unemployment rate, boost the nation’seconomic growth and narrow the development gap between regions.

The Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s EconomicDevelopment (MP3EI), which was launched from May 2011 as a strategicbreakthrough, was designed as part of the agenda for "development forall."

The MP3EI projects are geographically divided into sixeconomic corridors, including the corridors of Sumatra, Kalimantan,Java, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Papua-Maluku.

Sumatrais being designated as a centre for agriculture and energy, Java forindustries and services, Kalimantan for mining and energy, Sulawesi andNorth Maluku for agriculture and fisheries, Bali and East and West NusaTenggara for tourism and supporting national food self-sufficiency, andPapua and Maluku for natural and human resources.

IndonesianPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently expressed his satisfactionover the effective implementation of the programme. Since it waslaunched over two years ago, at least 259 projects have begun, with atotal investment of 737.9 trillion Rp (around 66.4 billion USD).

The president was quoted as saying that the projects are becoming areality thanks to cooperation among the central government, localadministrations and business community.

One of the priorities inthe MP3EI projects is the development of infrastructure, as thegovernment wants to improve the connectivity of the archipelago nationwhich consists of over 17,000 islands.

It is estimated thatIndonesia needs 4,800 trillion Rp in funds to improve the country’sbasic infrastructures, based upon the medium-term development plan forthe 2015-2019 period.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi

Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina, along with foreign partners Sinopec from China and Kuwait’s Kufpec, has signed a contract to explore the Melati oil and gas block, located off the coast of Sulawesi. The block is estimated to contain trillions of cubic feet of gas reserves.
