A total of 203 natural disasters hit Indonesia in January, killing 178 people.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), thedisasters, ranging from landslides, flash floods, flooding and volcanoeruptions, forced 1.2 million others to evacuate.

The largest number of evacuees was from North Sulawesi, and the fundsneeded to carry out rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts wasestimated to reach almost 2 trillion Rp (164 million USD), according toHead of BNPB’s Information Data Affairs, Sutopo Purwo.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi

Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina, along with foreign partners Sinopec from China and Kuwait’s Kufpec, has signed a contract to explore the Melati oil and gas block, located off the coast of Sulawesi. The block is estimated to contain trillions of cubic feet of gas reserves.
