Hanoi (VNA) – Another strongearthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the tourist island of Lombok,Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province, on August 9.
According to Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, many buildings onthe island collapsed due to the quake. There has been no information on thenumber of casualties, and no warning of tsunami.
Earlier on August 5, the island was jolted by a 6.9-magnitude quake. The deathtoll from the disaster has climbed to 347 while nearly 1,500 people wereinjured as of August 8 night.
The data was reported at a meeting of sub-district heads and the regent onAugust 8, said spokesman of the National Agency for Disaster Management ofIndonesia Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
He said over 165,000 out of some 200,000 living in the north of Lombok islandhave lost their houses and been forced to evacuate.
According to the agency, there were up to 332 aftershocks following theearthquake.-VNA
