Jakarta (VNA) – Five terrorists were arrested by Indonesia’s Densus 88counter-terrorism squad on October 2 for allegedly involving in the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen (MIT), amilitant group linked to the self-claimed Islamic State (IS).
The suspectswere captured in Central Sulawesi as they attempted to assemble bombs and spyseveral police stations to plan terrorist acts, said the national police’sspokesperson Dedi Prasetyo.
The Densus 88confiscated a number of self-made bombs, weapons and IS flag from the locationof the arrest.
The MIT, whosemembers have sworn allegiance to the IS group, has been active in the Poso areaof Sulawesi Island in recent years.
The group’soverall force had beenreduced to seven fighters, including its leader Ali Kalora, following recentkillings of other members of the militant group.
In July,Indonesia extended Operation Tinombala, a joint military-police task force thathas targeted MIT militants on Sulawesi since January 2016, by three months.
Tinombalareplaced another joint operation to pursue the militants on Sulawesi, CamarMaleo, which began in 2015./.
