TheUnited Nations' highest court said a 1962 ruling made by the courtdetermined that Cambodia "has sovereignty over the whole territory ofthe promontory of Preah Vihear" and therefore Thailand was under anobligation to withdraw "from the territory Thai military or policeforces or other guards or keepers" stationed around the temple.
Thecourt's 1962 verdict determined that the 900-year-old temple on theCambodia-Thailand border belongs to Cambodia, but did not rule onthe sovereignty over the 4.6 sq km of land adjacent to it.
Afterthe temple was designated as a World Heritage site in 2008, Cambodianand Thai troops engaged in conflicts over the land around it, resultingin casualties on both sides.
Cambodia submitted the border dispute to the ICJ in April, 2011.
Aheadof the ruling by The Hague-based ICJ, leaders of the two countriescalled for calm. The court decision is binding and cannot be appealed.-VNA
