Hue Central Hospital performs record number of organ transplants

Thua Thien –Hue (VNA) – The Hue Central Hospital in the central province ofThua Thien – Hue conducted 21organ transplants in August, the highest number ever in a month, according to Director Prof. Ph.D PhamNhu Hiep.

The 21 surgeries included a liver, two heart and18 kidney transplants, he said.

Heparticularly mentioned the same-day organ transplants performed by the hospitalon August 31, saying the organs from a brain-dead donor in Hanoi weretransported to the province by air and transplanted into a 36-year-oldpatient of heart disease and a 52-year-old liver cancer patient.

Thetransplanted heart started beating on its own over four hours after removedfrom the donor’s body while the liver began fully functioning seven hours afterthe removal, the doctor added. The two recipients are in good condition.

So far, thehospital has performed over 800 organ transplants with many organs transportedto the recipients by air.

Founded in1894, the Hue Central Hospital is among Vietnam’s leading medical centres. It isthe first in the country to be named on the world’s heart-transplant list. It successfully carried out the first heart transplant in 2011.

On August 9, the hospital established a centre for tissue and organtransplatation and launched a campaign calling for tissue and organ donation.On the day of launch, over 100 people registered to become donors. –VNA
