HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City’s healthinsurance fund recorded a surplus of 680 billion VND (over 30 million USD) inits balance last year.
Cao Van Sang, Director of the municipal Social InsuranceAgency, said more than 6.4 million local people bought health insurance in2016, accounting for 78 percent of the city’s population. The figure is onepercent higher than the city’s target but lower than the country’s averagelevel.
The agency will transfer 20 percent of the sum to the HCM CityPeople’s Committee to buy health insurance for the poor and provide equipmentfor health establishments at district and commune-levels across the city.
Nguyen Thi Thu, Vice Chairwoman of the municipal People’sCommittee, said the rise in the number of people buying social and healthinsurances last year was attributed to the concerted efforts of the city’sinsurance sector and local administrations.
However, she noted, the local administrations, especially theVietnam Fatherland Front’s chapters at all levels, should make greaterendeavours to fulfill the target of increasing healthinsurance coverage to 80.7 percent of the city’s population in 2017 and 90percent in 2020.-VNA
