The UNChildren’s Fund (UNICEF) and the municipal Department of Labour, WarInvalids and Social Affairs and UNICEF on June 12 held a technicalseminar on the implementation of the phase.
The 3.86million USD project, carried out in five districts, including District12, Binh Thanh, Binh Tan, Nha Be and Can Gio, focuses on implementmeasures to observe children’s rights; protecting children, especiallyvulnerable ones; building a child-friendly judicial system; andproviding development-targeted services and ensuring children rights foreducation.
Vice Director of the municipalDepartment of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi TuyetNhung said that the second phase will help the city achieve itsfive-year socio-economic development plan, especially in areas relatedto child protection, education and health care.
Thefirst phase (2010-2012) of the project helped almost all children inproject areas gain access to services on health care, nutrition, cleanwater, environmental hygiene and education.
According to the department, HCM City now has more than 70,000children with special difficulties. Over the past five years, the cityhas reported 575 child sexual abuses. In 2010, about 1,000 childrencommitted crimes, accounting for 12 percent of the city’s total cases.-VNA
