HCM City (VNA) – Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Dinh La Thang asked for US assistance in responding to climate change in Vietnam while receiving US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius in the city on April 14.
Thang briefed the diplomat on the impact of drought and saline intrusion in southern localities, especially in the Mekong Delta, where tens of millions of lives are being affected, he said.
He also urged the US to recognise Vietnam as a market economy soon, while calling for more US investment in Vietnam.
Ambassador Osius expressed his belief that the upcoming visit to Vietnam made by President Barack Obama will open up more opportunities to develop the two countries’ relations, considering that both are participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
Speaking of municipal authorities’ support of the Fulbright University project, the diplomat said it was a way to invest in the youth and the future.-VNA
