HCM City (VNA) – About 15 kilogrammes of South African elephant tusks were seized by the customs office at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on July 19.
The customs officers at the airport discovered the amount of ivories, cut into 31 small pieces, hidden inside a consignment en route from the Czech Republic to Vietnam.
The smuggled ivories were estimated to worth about 1 billion VND (44,840 USD).
They were shipped to a 23-year-old man, Vietnamese national, living in the Mekong Delta province of Long An. He was not able to show any valid license for importing ivory when handling customs clearance.
The case is under further investigation.
