From the beginning of March, inspectors from the municipalDepartment of Construction have started conducting inspections on theobservation of legal document relating to work safety and environmental sanitationat a number of construction sites. Specifically, they will focus on projects inBa Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Long Bien, Soc Son, Me Linh, Dong Anh and Gia Lamdistricts.
According to the Hanoi Construction Department Inspectorate,the inspections will help it promptly detect, prevent and handle violations onwork safety and environmental sanitation.
Inspectors will review shortcomings and difficulties in theimplementation of work safety and environmental sanitation at constructionsites.
At the same time, they will propose measures to themunicipal People’s Committee with a view to improving the effectiveness of thework.
A series of workplace accidents in Hanoi last year raisedconcerns over safety and the responsibility of agencies.
Ten accidents were reported in the city last year, leavingfive people dead and dozens injured.
Experts blamed poor management of employers in supervisingconstruction sites and the fact that labourers were not properly trained onlabour safety regulations. Negligence while at work was also a factor.
Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the municipal People’sCommittee, recently requested the Department of Construction to work withrelevant agencies in strengthening inspections at construction projects andstrictly deal with violators. Investors who failed to ensure labour safetyshould be suspended, he said.
Last year, inspectors from the department inspected 50construction projects and imposed administrative fines on 20 totalling nearly 300million VND (13,000 USD).-VNA
