Phnom Penh (VNA) – Two outbreaks of H5N1 avian flu were reported in Siem Reap and Battambang provinces, according to Cambodian media on November 18.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, about 2,100 infected ducks in Battambang died while the number in Siem Reap was 180 as of November 12.

Currently, some 8,800 ducks in the country are vulnerable to the epidemic disease.

The infected birds were found in free-ranging backyard flocks.

Local authorities came to investigate after they were informed by the owners that their poultry flocks were sick, and all samples taken from the poultry tested positive for H5N1 virus.

Director of the Cambodian Health Ministry’s Department of Communicable Disease Control Ly Sovann said that the outbreaks have not yet spread to human.

He added that response teams were sent to monitor the health of the people living in affected areas.
