Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese workers in Qatar, wherediplomatic tension with Gulf countries is escalating, will be evacuated if thesituation becomes complicated, said the Department of Overseas Labour under theMinistry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
At a press meeting on June 12, Deputy Directorof the department Tong Hai Nam said according to businesses’ statistics, thereare 1,100 Vietnamese workers in Qatar, not 1,800 people like initial data showed.
To protect them, the Department of OverseasLabour asked companies that sent workers to Qatar to continue reviewing thenumber of labourers to help repatriate them if necessary.
Nam said if diplomatic sanctions are imposed onQatar, the livelihood of those repatriated will not be impacted as Qatar is oneof the countries with the highest per capita income in the world.
Most Vietnamese workers in the country work forcontractors who are responsible for protecting their employees’ interests, headded.
Also at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Labour,Invalids and Social Affairs Doan Mau Diep noted from June 2016 through May2017, 17,747 people in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Triand Thua Thien-Hue went to work abroad. They benefitted from a programme assistinglocal labourers impacted by the marine pollution caused by Formosa.-VNA
