Government approves first phase of Long Thanh int’l airport

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued Decision1777/QD-TTg approving the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport inthe southern province of Dong Nai.

The projecthas four component projects such as headquarters of State management agencies,flight management services, essential airport facilities, and other works.

Major workssuch as airport buildings, the aircraft apron, passenger terminals, and cargo terminalswill be built by the Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), which operates 21airports across the country. The ACV has to raise funding for theconstruction.

The firstphase of the airport, expected to cost more than 4.6 billion USD, is projectedto be completed by 2025.

Theinvestment was approved by the National Assembly in 2017, which also issued aresolution on compensation and resettlement of and support for affectedindividuals and organisations.

The PrimeMinister urged Dong Nai province’s authorities to hand over the required landsin October so that construction of the airport could begin early next year.

He also seta deadline for assessing cleared land for compensation purposes by the end ofthis month.

The Ministryof Transport should work closely with the province to promptly resolve allchallenges to ensure the project remains on schedule, he said.

The airportwork requires more than 5,000ha of land and more than 364ha elsewhere to buildtwo resettlement sites.

Around 4,800households and 26 organisations are expected to be relocated to make wayfor it. 

Spanning atotal area of more than 5,580ha, the airport will straddle six communes in LongThanh district. It is expected to cost 336.63 trillion VND (14.47 billionUSD), with the construction divided into three phases. 

In the firstphase, one runway with a length of 4,000m, taxiways, an apron, and a passengerterminal with other auxiliary works involving a total floor area of 373,000sq.m will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnesof cargo each year. 

The airportis expected to have four runways, four passenger terminals and other auxiliaryworks to ensure a capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes ofcargo a year by 2040. 

Tan Son NhatInternational Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest, has beenseriously overloaded for years, both in the air and on the ground.

The Ministryof Transport said the Long Thanh International Airport is a key nationalproject that would have a significant impact on the southern key economicregion./.
