Hanoi (VNA) – The Government ofGermany has supported the implementation of two joint projects between Cambodiaand Laos and between Cambodia and Thailand, on natural resources management inthe Mekong River Basin.
According to the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the projects aim to better managenatural resources and address flood and drought issues in the Mekong Riverbasin. They are two out of five projects built basing on the Basin Development Strategy.
The projects’ first phase will be carried out from April2018 – March 2019. Through the projects, the member countries will promotetheir trans-boundary cooperation in planning and managing shared water resources for their mutual benefit.
Besides, the projects also focus on joint assessmentand planning for flood and droughtmanagement in border areas of Cambodia and Thailand.
The MRC said the projects are hoped to attract funding support, contributing toensuring water security and promoting socio-economic development in Laos,Cambodia and Thailand.
The MRC is the intergovernmental body responsible forcooperation on the sustainable management of the Mekong River Basin whose membersinclude Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It serves as a regionalplatform for water diplomacy as well as a knowledge hub of water resourcesmanagement for the sustainable development of the region.-VNA
