The crew and cadets on board werebriefed on Vietnam’s national defence policy by representatives fromthe Department of Foreign Relations and the Military Strategy Instituteunder the Vietnam Ministry of National Defence, and the Ho Chi Minh CityDepartment of External Relations.
Tonnerre along withthe anti-submarine frigate Georges Leygues, which docked at Ho ChiMinh City’s port, are visiting Vietnam as part of activities to markthe 40th anniversary of Vietnam–France bilateral ties.
The 123 cadets aboard the two French vessels are from many differentcountries, including one officer from the Vietnamese Navy, and on atraining course undertaken by the French side.
Tonnerre is regarded as one of the leading assault landing crafts in theworld. Measuring 200 metres long and 32 metres wide, with adisplacement of 21,300 tonnes, the vessel can carry 16 heavy or 35 lighthelicopters, 4 high-speed landing crafts, and 70 tanks or armouredvehicles.-VNA
