The ASEAN Competition Policy and Law Handbook for businesses wascompiled by the ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC), includingleaders and senior officials of agencies specializing in competitionmanagement in ASEAN member countries, with Vietnam’s leadership. It wasmade public in an event on the sidelines of the 42 nd ASEAN EconomicMinisters’ Meeting (AEM 42) in Da Nang city on Aug. 22-28.
The handbook aims to provide sufficient information related tocompetition policies and laws in ASEAN member countries to all peoplewho have concerns. It will help raise public awareness and competitiveactivity and promote a just and transparent competitive environment forregional businesses.
Addressing the seminar, BachVan Mung, Head of the Competition Management Department of the Ministryof Industry and Trade, emphasized the importance of competition policiesand laws in the economic development process of every country,especially in the increasing international economic integration process.
“The handbook’s production is the first step inraising public awareness of competition in regional countries as thetarget of building an ASEAN economic community with high competitivenessby 2015 is approaching,” Mung said.
The Head ofthe ASEAN Secretariat’s Competition and Consumers Protection Division,Thitapha Wattanapruttipaisan, shared her idea that the handbook wouldnot only create a foundation for building the ASEAN economic community,but also promote trade and investment relations between ASEAN and itspartners.
Together with forum to introduce thehandbook in Vietnam , a number of similar forum were also organized inThailand , Singapore , the Philippines , Indonesia and Malaysia .
According to the Competition ManagementDepartment, only four ASEAN members – Indonesia , Singapore ,Thailand and Vietnam –
have issued and executed Competition Laws and set up an agency in charge of competition.
Recently, Malaysia made public competition law that is expectedto take effect in 2012, while other ASEAN members are drafting their ownlaws./.
