Food safety requested during Tet festival

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has requested the ministries of health, agriculture and rural development, industry and trade and People's Committees of provinces and cities work to ensure food safety during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

Hanoi(VNS/VNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has requested the ministriesof health, agriculture and rural development, industry and tradeand People's Committees of provinces and cities work to ensure food safetyduring the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

He also requested thatthey focus on directing the management and ensuring food safety to ensureall food for domestic consumption reaches the same standard as exported goods.

Traceability of basicfood products on the market is also required, while prestigious products musthave geographical indications and be protected in accordance with the law.

The ministries need toset up plans, roadmaps and measures to direct the application of food standardsfor domestic consumption and traceability. 

The Ministry of Scienceand Technology was asked to work with ministries and People'sCommittees to develop a mechanism and support programmes to protectreputable and quality goods on domestic and international markets.

The Ministry of Healthwill work with the ministries of agriculture and rural developmentand industry and trade to put the food safety information system intooperation.

In 2020, food safetyinspections were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, violationcases were still detected and handled in many different forms, ensuringcompliance with the law and promptly publicising the results to helppeople choose safe food.

In 2020, the Ministryof Health worked closely with other ministries to strengthen the management ofadvertising on food and food supplement. Establishments, organisations andindividuals that publish advertising improperly were sanctioned.

The health sectorinspected 406,278 establishments and discovered 58,317 violations of foodsafety and handled 10,077 establishments with total fines worth 48.6billion VND. A total of 2,737 establishments were fined 19.1 billion VND bythe agriculture sector.

By October 2020, themarket management forces nationwide had inspected 12,240 cases and handled7,158 cases of food safety violations with fines of 27.9 billion VND and seizedgoods worth more than 28.5 billion VND.

A total of 8,529 caseson food safety violations were detected by the environmental policeand fines of 52.6 billion VND were levied.

Prosecutions werebrought in seven cases of violating food safety regulations./.
