SonLa (VNA) – Prolonged, heavy torrential rains in the northern mountainous province of Son La from August 28-29have caused flash floods and serious landslides in the locality.
According to initial information, floods swept away one person in Cap Navillage in Song Ma’s Na Bo, and submerged three schools in the locality.
Heavy rains occurring on a wide scale alsoflooded 25ha of rice and other crop farms in Ta Hoc commune of Mai Son district,and caused landslides on the commune’s section of Highway 110.
Ten households in Muong La district have been evacuated dueto heavy rain.
Meanwhile, floods triggered by prolonged torrential rains killed a two-year-oldchild and injured his mother in Mai Chau district’s Van Mai commune of thenorthern province of Hoa Binh on August 28.
The floods also damaged 130ha of rice and 30 of fish farms, and swept away 40 headsof cattle and 50 heads of poultry.
According to Nguyen Van Thai, Chairman of Nam Po districtPeople’s Committee, the heavy rains on August 27-28 caused property losses of 12billion VND (514,920 USD), with the communes worst affected being Cha Nua, PhinHo, Cha Cang, Cha To, Nam Khan, Nam Tin, and Na Hy.
Many irrigation works in the district were also damaged, he said.
Landslides also caused traffic jams along many of the routes crossingthe localities.
The Military Commands and the Steering Committees for DisasterResponse, and Search and Rescue forSon La and Hoa Binh have coordinated with relevant agencies to quickly combatthe consequences caused by floods in the locality.
The authorities of the two provinces were quickto offer support for families of the deceased and injured victims, whileevacuating locals residing in high-risk areas.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predictedthat heavy rain would continue to fall in the northern region and the centralprovince of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An over the next three days.
Localities have been asked to keep close watch on the situation and take effectivemeasures to minimise the loss of life as well as assets. –VNA
