The workshop aims to assess flood risks in CanTho, thus preparing a comprehensive resilience plan into 2030 andmeasures for sustainable flood management.
Accordingto the WB, Can Tho is one of the Mekong Delta localities most heavilyimpacted by climate change and sea level rises.
Inrecent years, the city has seen unusual flooding. Levels rose from 1.79metres in 2000 to 2.03 metres in 2007 and 2.15 metres in 2011. It is notthe result of flooding upriver but from tidal surges and poor drainagein the region.
Located in the lower Mekong region,Can Tho is regularly affected by natural disasters, of which flooding, riverbank erosion, whirlwinds, thunder and lightning have the greatestimpact on the lives of the city’s residents.
At theevent, participants said that Can Tho should improve its main roads androadside housing, combine environmental monitoring with environmentalprotection and sustainable development, and pay attention to climatechange in its urban development plans.-VNA
