Hanoi (VNA) –Flash floods hit Padang Sidempuan regency in Indonesia’s western province ofNorth Sumatra on March 26 night, killing five people and displacing hundreds ofothers.
Floods were caused by torrential rains whichtriggered an overflow of water from the Batang Ayumi River, washing away 17houses on the riverbank, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho – a spokesman of theNational Disaster Management Agency.
Floodwater with mud also severely damaged many schoolbuildings.
Evacuation and rescue for affected people havebeen underway in several parts of the province, he noted.-VNA
