First Golden Rice Ear Awards highlight agriculture

The first biennial Vietnam Golden Rice Ear Awards took place in Hanoi on November 14 to honour outstanding products which have contributed importantly to agricultural and rural development.

Coincidingwith the 67th anniversary of the Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment (November 14), this year’s event selected 56 winners frommore than 300 entries under three main groups including usefulinventions, scientific research projects; plant and animal breeds,agricultural equipment and handicrafts; and reputable agricultural brandnames.

The winners included an intensive rice farming model bythe Plant Protection Agency, the Khang Dan mutant rice variety of theCentral Rice Seed Joint Stock Company, and urea fertiliser of the Ha BacFertiliser and Chemicals Company.

So far this year, Vietnamhas exported over 6.6 million tonnes of rice, earning 3 billion USDfor the country, according to the Vietnam Food Association.

Depending on new contracts signed in November, rice export volume isexpected to hit 7.7 million tonnes in 2012, the highest figure everrecorded over the past 20 years.-VNA

The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu on October 21 signed a cooperation agreement with Uiseong county, Gyeongsangbuk-do province of the Republic of Korea (RoK) on sending local labourers to the RoK to work seasonally under the form of locality-to-locality collaboration between the two countries in the 2023 - 2027 period.

Tien Giang strives to reduce poverty rate to 0.87% this year
