Nguyen Thu Thao of theVietnam Association for Handicraft Exporters said the global market forhandicraft and gift products was worth around 100 billion USD everyyear, with major consumption markets concentrated in the United States,Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Holland, and Hong Kong.
Incomparison, the export value of Vietnam's handicraft products reached1.6 billion USD, holding a 1.5 percent global market share.
Handicraft products have great export potential, according to Le Ba Ngoc, the association's general secretary.
Ngoc pointed out that Vietnam's major advantages in developing handicraft products are raw materials and labour force.
Arecent survey conducted by Vietnam Rural Industries Research andDevelopment Institute showed that 85 percent of handicraft companies inthe country exported their products.
"The most important effortneeded to boost handicraft exports is manufacturing products ofcompetitive quality for global markets," Ngoc stressed.
Thehandicraft items of Vietnam have yet to create a footprint or navigateto specific markets because Vietnamese handicraft manufacturers mainlyproduce low-cost products in bulk for large retailers.
Around 90percent of Vietnamese handicraft products are made to suit the technicaldesigns of importers and are not made under Vietnamese labels.
Expertspoint out that Vietnamese handicraft producers must understand theimportance of designs and sophistication in combining culturalfootprints with constant innovation, which will enhance thecompetitiveness of their products.
In addition, handicraftproducers need to pay attention to obtain international certificationsto penetrate and expand to markets with stricter norms.-VNA
