The scholars, six from universities in Hanoi and five from Ho Chi MinhCity, will leave for Singapore by the month’s end to pursue three- orfour-year undergraduate degree courses.
The total estimated value of the 11 scholarship awards is 1.24 millionUSD, or an average of 113,000 USD for each scholarship.
“As a small country, Singapore has a limited capacity. However, withinour resource constraints, we are committed to sharing our experiencesand expertise with Vietnam and our ASEAN friends in a practical andtangible way via Singapore’s technical assistance programme,”Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Simon Wong said at the awardsceremony for six students from Hanoi on July 15.
A separate ceremony was held on July 14 in Ho Chi Minh City to present scholarship to five students.
At the sixth ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998, then SingaporePrime Minister Goh Chok Tong announced that Singapore would offerundergraduate scholarships to ASEAN students. The objective of theSingapore scholarship at the time was to help alleviate the problem ofeducating young people in ASEAN countries due to difficulties broughtabout by the Asian financial crisis.
Since its inception, 155 Vietnamese students have received Singapore scholarship, including 11 students selected for this year./.
