About 3,160 Khmer households in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Tranghave been provided with electricity just before the Khmer traditionalChol Chnam Thmay (New Year) festival, which falls in mid-April thisyear.
As of now, 96.6 percent of the province’s total Khmer households or about 92,400, have gained access to electricity.
According to Director of the Soc Trang Power Company Huynh Minh Hai,in the first three months of this year, the company has providedelectricity to more than 8,400 households, surpassing the year’s target.
The electrification raised the total number of householdsaccessing electricity across the province to 315,500, or 97 percent.
Soc Trang is home to more than 400,000 Khmer people, accounting for 30.71 percent of the province’s population.
The Chol Chnam Thmay New Year festival is one of the most importantfestivals of the year for the Khmer people. It lasts three days (fourdays in leap years) and is usually held in a pagoda.
On thesefestive days, Khmer people go to visit each other and wish goodhealth, good luck and prosperity to each other. They also join in funactivities.-VNA
