Earthquake strikes off eastern Indonesia

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked North Sulawesi province in the eastern part of Indonesia on June 16, but it was unlikely to cause tsunami and casualties.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked North Sulawesi province in theeastern part of Indonesia on June 16, but it was unlikely to causetsunami and casualties.

According to the IndonesiaMeteorology and Geophysics Agency, the quake struck at 4:04am (Jakartatime) with epicenter at 71km northeast Sangihe Island and with the depthat 71km under seabed.

Previously at 00:40 am(Jakarta time), another quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struckoff East Nusa Tenggara province in central part of Indonesia.

It was centered at 64 km southeast of the province and with the depth at 65km under seabed without causing any damage.

Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi

Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina, along with foreign partners Sinopec from China and Kuwait’s Kufpec, has signed a contract to explore the Melati oil and gas block, located off the coast of Sulawesi. The block is estimated to contain trillions of cubic feet of gas reserves.
