HCM City (VNA) - Local authorities in the MekongDelta province of Dong Thap will ban fishing in the breeding season from May toJune to protect aquatic resources in the locality. 

Themove aims to protec the natural aquaculture areas for the future as said by aresident in An Binh A commune.

“DongThap has tangled canal systems with plenty of natural food, so fish can growand develop faster there than in other places,” Nguyen Van Tung added.

A report from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Developmentsaid that illegal fishing using explosives and electrical shocks is still goingon. 

In addition, the aquatic ecosystem and natural breeding grounds are affectedby boats engaging in illegal activities on the water.

The boats are also causing pollution. 

The provincial People’s Committee said it would raise public awarenessamong residents about the importance of keeping these aquaculture areas free ofwaste and illegal activities.-VNA
