In her speech, Nga said amidst currentcomplicated and uncertain challenges, the UN needs to take a comprehensive approachand put humans in the central position to prevent and deal with disputes inline with the UN Charter and international law, neither use nor threat to useforce, respect political independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity ofeach country.
Vietnam welcomed UN SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres’s reform initiatives with a view to fulfilling theUN’s mission in peacekeeping and helping member states achieve developmentgoals, she said.
The ambassador reiterated Vietnam’sconsistent policy of peacefully settling disputes, including the East Seaissue, in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on theLaw of the Sea (UNCLOS), and in respect of legal and diplomatic process towardsachieving a Code of Conduct(COC) in the East Sea.
She revealed that Vietnam isaccelerating preparations for the launch of a level-2 field hospital in SouthSudan.
In his opening remarks, Presidentof the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak called on member states to give priorityto preventing conflicts, building and maintaining peace, upholding the UN’sleadership in strengthening global peace and security, promoting sustainabledevelopment and ensuring human rights.
UN Secretary General AntonioGuterres highlighted the need to support member states, especially those hit byconflicts, and called for brainpower, science-technology and budget resourcesto the UN’s activities to prevent conflicts, maintain peace and deal withimmigration and refugee crises.
Participants emphasized the necessityto deal with root causes of conflicts, uphold the role of intermediaries, andencourage the involvement of women and young people.
They agreed to enhance the UN’sleadership role, support the UN Secretary General’s reform initiatives toimprove the efficiency of the organisation’s activities, increase collectiveefforts and partnership, and pool necessary resources for peace maintenance andsustainable development.
As scheduled, the UN GeneralAssembly and Security Council will adopt a resolution on April 26, requestingthe UN Secretary General to submit next reports on the implementation ofrecommendations regarding peace building and maintenance.-VNA
