Deputy PM inspects amnesty in southern prisons

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with and listened to the expectations of prisoners in Xuan Loc prison in the southern province of Dong Nai on August 16, ahead of their amnesty release date in honour of National Day (September 2).

The Deputy PM said he hopes that after being released, the inmates would resettle quickly and become contributing members of the community.

Meeting the Xuan Loc prison’s supervisory committee, he praised the efforts of prison officials to hold creative activities such as a meeting day for prisoners’ families, a day of writing apology letters and small monetary savings allowances for prisoners with good progress.

He also pointed to the need to focus more attention on supporting the prisoners’ assimilation into society after completing their sentences.

According to Colonel Ho Phi Thang, Xuan Loc prison warden, 525 out of the jail’s 5,100 prisoners will be granted amnesty on this occasion, including 460 male and 65 female inmates.

The same day, Deputy PM Phuc also worked with Dong Nai leaders on implementing 2015 amnesty. He called on the community and enterprises to jointly support the former prisoners to rejoin society.

On the occasion, Dong Nai has 117 prisoners eligible to receive amnesty.

Earlier on August 15, the Deputy PM also visited Xuyen Moc prison in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau where over 2,700 prisoners are being held.

At Xuyen Moc, 258 prisoners with good performance are being considered for amnesty. Thirty-three out of 100 offenders detained in local prison are also expected to receive the pardon.-VNA
