Deputy Defence Minister wants cooperation in addressing war consequences

Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh has called for strengthened cooperation between Vietnam and the US army as well as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the settlement of war consequences.

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinhhas called for strengthened cooperation between Vietnam and the US army as wellas the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the settlement of warconsequences during separate meetings in Hanoi on July 6.

Meeting with a delegation of US congressmen ledby Michael Rogers, Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee under theHouse Armed Services Committee in the US House of Representatives, Vinh saidthe US and Vietnam are recording strong and firm development in their defencecooperation, and there remain numerous opportunities to reinforce ties in thisfield.

In the time ahead, the two armies need to paymore attention to cooperation in the settlement of war and dioxin consequencesand the return of war mementos. These are meaningful activities which will helpopen up a broader future for Vietnam-US defence cooperation, he noted.

The deputy minister and US congressmen also comparedtheir viewpoints on each country’s foreign and defence policies, bilateraldefence cooperation potential, and some regional and international issues ofcommon concern.

Receiving KOICA Country Director in Vietnam KimJin-oh, Deputy Minister Vinh congratulated his guest on the latter’sappointment to the position, expressing his hope that Kim will activelycontribute to relations between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea, as well asbetween the two countries’ armies.

He appreciated KOICA’s assistance and asked formore support to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. He also urged the agencyto bolster ties with the Vietnamese Defence Ministry in addressing warconsequences.

Kim Jin-oh said KOICA and the Defence Ministryof Vietnam are actively implementing the first project on resolving post-warbomb and mine consequences. He affirmed that he will exert every effort toensure the project’s success and turn it into a symbol of the effective andlong-term cooperation between his agency and the ministry.-VNA
