Hanoi (VNA) – The death toll from a speedboat accident in Indonesia on November 2 has climbed to 54 as dozens of bodies were found floating in the ocean, an official has said.
Search teams on November 4 pulled another 36 corpses from the sea around Indonesia’s Batam Island, south of Singapore, local police chief Sam Budi Gusdian said.
Forty-one people have been found alive while six remain missing. Only 12 passengers have been formally identified, he noted.
The police chief added that one of the crew members managed to survive and was being questioned by police.
The overcrowded speedboat was carrying three crew and 98 passengers, mostly Indonesian migrant workers, from Malaysia to Batam at the time of the accident.-VNA
