Dak Lak exports coffee to 80 countries and territories

Coffee produced in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak has found their way into the market of 80 countries and territories worldwide, 20 more markets compared to the number reported early this year.

The locality’s coffee export turnover has hit 440 millionUSD so far this year, a year-on-year increase of 23 percent, achievingnearly 59 percent of the plan set for the year.

The top 10importers of Dak Lak coffee are Germany, Japan, the US, Italy,Switzerland, the Republic of Korea (RoK), India, Spain, Indonesia andRussia.
The September 2 Import-Export Company is theleading coffee exporter in Dak Lak, shipping abroad over 73,657 tonnes so far this year, raking in over 147 million USD, 114.23 percent higherthan that of the same period last year.

Apart fromits traditional markets in Europe, the company has found outlets inseveral Asian countries such as Japan, the RoK and the Philippines.

Dak Lak boasts the country’s largest coffee growing area with over200,000 ha, making up 30 percent of the nation’s coffee land andproducing up to 400,000 tonnes of beans annually.

Localauthorities have worked out a series of measures to further improve thequality and output of export coffee so as to satisfy thequality-requirements and increasing demand of foreign markets.
Coffee exporters in the province have cooperated with farmers to shiftstrongly to “clean” production in order to meet increasingly strictdemand of importers. An estimated 41,000 farms with a total acreage of61,458ha in Dak Lak are now following standardised coffee-growingmodels, such as 4C Code of Conduct, Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade andUTZ Certified.

The province plans to continueexpanding coffee-growing areas licensed to use the PGI and will call forthe support of the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project(EU-MUTRAP) to help Buon Ma Thuot coffee enter the European marketsoon.

Vietnam exported 1.04 million tonnes ofcoffee in the first half of this year, earning 2.12 billion USD,according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The figures represented increases of 31.7 percent in volume and 24.7 percent in value on a yearly basis.-VNA
