Da Nang (VNA) – Da Nang is seekinginvestment to develop a solid waste treatment complex amid challenges facingthe central city in dealing with the large volume of untreated solid waste.
The municipal People’s Committee coordinatedwith the Ministry of Construction and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to holda workshop on May 29 to call for investment to implement the project.
Da Nang has about 850 – 900 tonnes of solidwaste collected and buried at the Khanh Son landfill site each day, but only 7– 10 percent of the waste are recycled.
The solid waste treatment complex project willbe carried out under the public-private partnership by the municipal People’sCommittee. It receives consultancy from and has its feasibility study reportmade by the ADB.
Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee NguyenNgoc Tuan said solid waste is being buried in Da Nang, but the city has yet tothoroughly ensure the environmental issue.
“To reduce environmental pollution, Da Nang is stepping up the solid wastetreatment complex project in Hoa Nhon commune of Hoa Vang district.”
To ensure the project’s smooth implementationand effective operation, it needs coordination from ministries and sectors, henoted, adding that the city is also learning about the capacity and technologyof potential investors so as to soon carry out this project.
At the workshop, officials and experts in solidwaste treatment, and domestic and foreign investors discussed difficulties inthe project implementation, along with some solid waste treatment solutions inVietnam and other countries.
Da Nang targets that by 2020, it will collectand treat 95 percent of the daily solid waste volume, 72 percent of which willbe recycled and reused.
The city strives to collect all daily solid waste and recycle and reuse 80percent of the volume by 2030. -VNA
