HCM City (VNA) – The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City hassent a document to the Defence Ministry to seek its advice on compilation ofrelevant dossiers about the historic Cu Chi Tunnels as the city is striving to gainUNESCO’s recognition of the tunnels as a world heritage site.
According to thecommittee, the historic relic site is a well-preserved military work that meetsa number of criteria, such as possessing outstanding global value, integrity,and authenticity according to the guidelines relating to the World HeritageConvention adopted by UNESCO.
The Cu Chi Tunnels,which are located in Phu My Hung commune of Cu Chi district, stretch a totallength of over 250 km. They were dug with simple tools and bare hands in the1940s, during the French occupation. The main axis system has a host ofbranches leading to underground hideouts, shelters, and entrances to othertunnels.
The site was recognisedas special national relic site in December 2015, due to its historical,cultural, scientific, aesthetic, and creative values.
Furthermore, the arearepresents one of the typical revolutionary bases that was of greatsignificance during the struggle for national reunification in the war against USimperialists./.
