Over 10,000 people across the country paid tribute to General VoNguyen Giap at his grave in central Quang Binh province’s Quang Trachdistrict on the 61 st anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu historicvictory, widely considered one of his greatest triumphs.
General Giap was the Commander-in-Chief of the Dien Bien Phu Campaignthat helped end Vietnam’s nine-year resistance war against Frenchcolonialists 61 years ago.
He was born in 1911 in Loc Thuycommune, Le Thuy district, and central Quang Binh province. He passedaway in Hanoi on October 4 last year at the age of 103.
As an eminent disciple of President Ho Chi Minh and the first Generaland Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnam People’s Army, he led his peopleto victory over both French and American armies.
With over 80 years serving the nation, he was loved and respected byVietnamese people and international friends and is a hero to generationsof officers and soldiers nationwide.-VNA
