Hanoi (VNA) – Sustainable production and consumption is a practical trend for socioeconomic development. In this process, businesses and consumers are two important factors that have close interactions and relationships with each other.

To ensure the efficiency of the sustainable production and consumption process, raising the awareness of relevant parties is an important factor for success. This was among main topics at a forum on promoting sustainable production and consumption in the modern distribution system held in Hanoi on August 1.

Le Trieu Dung, Chairman of the National Competition Commission, emphasised that sustainable production and consumption is a long-term process which requires the participation of all parties in society. The consumer is the decisive factor as they are beneficiaries as well as motivation and target to focus on as they make buying decisions.

According to a Nielsen IQ 2023 report, 49% of surveyed consumers shared that they brought their own bags or used "recycled" ones when shopping for food and essentials.

In addition, 47% of respondents said that they are forming the habit of buying necessary items and avoiding waste, and 45% are conscious of sorting recyclables and saving electricity.

This study also showed consumer expectations of businesses on practical initiatives and actions to improve the environment.

Specifically, 38% of consumers rated initiatives and practical actions of businesses to improve the environment as extremely important.

Another recent survey on green consumption trends in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by Intage Vietnam showed that green consumption is becoming an inevitable issue. The majority of consumers participating in the survey shared that they were aware of the need for activities to protect the environment. On that basis, they have gradually changed their behavior and habits to have a positive impact on the environment.

Affirming that sustainable production and consumption have become a clear trend in many countries, especially when the world's resources are increasingly depleted, Dung said at the forum is an event to gather ideas and common views among managers - producers - distributors - consumers, thereby contributing to building a green, circular and environmentally friendly economy.

Delegates at the event shared an overview of sustainable production, consumption as well as the needs of participation of consumers and involvement from the management agencies.

Quach Tat Liem, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province, said that the northern province has issued Decision No. 2583/QD-UBND dated October 23, 2020 on the implementation of the National Action Programme on sustainable production and consumption in the 2021 - 2030 period. This is the basis for departments, agencies and sectors to implement tasks towards assigned tasks and goals.

In June, Hoa Binh implemented the project on promoting Vietnamese enterprises to directly participate in foreign distribution networks by 2030. Of the participating enterprises, about 50% operating in distribution are supported to guide and apply solutions on clean production and energy saving.

In addition, the province has implemented a programme with the goal of reducing 60% of the use of non-biodegradable packaging in residential markets and commercial centres and supermarkets; having 55% of enterprises in industrial parks and industrial clusters applying technological innovation towards clean and environmentally friendly; having 70% of enterprises participating in the production and supply chain of safe agricultural products and food.

In particular, Hoa Binh will focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and establishments, in order to form a clean production chain in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, construction, consumer goods, mechanical engineering, and electrical-electronics, among others.

According to Liem, sustainable consumption is key to protecting natural resources, improving the quality of life and ensuring social security, and green consumption./.
