Vientiane (VNA) - A ceremony honouring the Vietnamese language took place in Vientiane on September 7, marking a step toward making annual Vietnamese Language Day (September 8) a significant cultural and spiritual mark for the Vietnamese community in Laos.
In his opening remarks, Chargé d'Affaires Phan Minh Chien of the Vietnamese Embassy stressed the need for passionate ambassadors of the mother tongue to inspire, spread, and encourage its teaching, learning, and speaking within the overseas Vietnamese (OV) community and among international friends.
The ceremony featured a competition in which the organisers presented questions in Vietnamese ranging from easy to difficult and covering the culture, people, and countries of both Vietnam and Laos. Contestants were challenged to answer as many questions as possible.
Attendees also enjoyed cultural performances by children of the Vietnamese community living and working in Laos.
On this occasion, the embassy awarded certificates of merit and prizes to three contestants who made it to the final round of the 2024 "Search for Vietnamese Language Ambassadors Abroad" competition, organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (SCOV) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among them, Lanny Phetnion, a Lao lecturer at the National University of Laos, was honored as the first foreigner winning the contest./.
