Can Tho works to better water supply capacity

The Mekong Delta City of Can Tho is implementing a number of water supply projects in a bid to raise total water supply capacity to 491,606 cu.m a day by 2020 in accordance with the Government’s approved plan in the 2015-2020 period.

By then local water plants are expectedto meet 100 percent of demand for production and daily life of people inthe nine districts of Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, Cai Rang, O Mon, Thot Not,Phong Dien, Co Do, Vinh Thanh and Thoi Lai.

The projects,implemented by the Can Tho Water Supply and Drainage Company Ltd,include the upgrade of existing plants and construction of some newfacilities from now to 2017.

After 2017, thelocality will build a water plant with a capacity of 500,000 cu.m in itsfirst period, which will mainly serve industrial production.

The municipal Centre of Rural Environmental Sanitation and Clean WaterCentre has also spent 513 billion VND on improving hygienic watersupply in rural areas, with a target of bringing hygienic water to 99percent of the local rural population in 2015.

According to the set plan, the centre will build 72 new water-supplystations, while upgrading 168 existing ones, installing 234water-distribution pipes, and drilling 1,000 water-wells.

Atthe same time, drainage systems will be built for new urban area, whilethose in old areas will be upgraded and sewer pipes will be installedfor collecting wastewater for treatment.

The city plans to putinto operation a wastewater treatment plant in Tra Noc Industrial Parkat the end of the first quarter, and the first phase of another one inThot Not Industrial Park, which have capacities of 12,000 cu.m, and5,000 cu.m a day, respectively.

Four more wastewatertreatment plants with a total capacity of 200,000 cu.m a day will bebuilt in the 2016-2020 period, which will be able to treat allindustrial and daily waste water discharged by the city.-VNA
